January Stato

 Fanfare.....

January saw me halting running AGAIN for the right niggly calf... I wasn't impressed and have now wholly blamed my asics gel cumulus shoes... I turned back to these in late 2023 as New Balance, my sted fast running shoe brand from my training in the 2010s no longer did what I used to wear and everything I read felt like I didn't like any of their new versions (too tall, too squishy or too expensive). So I turned back to the brand previous to that and got my self some asics cumulus (as asics still did that, just version 561... ok maybe just 20 something), and then also got myself a pair of asics tri noosa.... now I won't go into all the specifics but one point of difference is the heal to toe drop - the old new balance were about 6mm, the tri noosa are about the same and the cumulus a whopping 10mm... so basically I'm blaming my calf strain issue on that 4mm difference - as I only get the strain after running in the cumulus - which I've happened to do slightly more of this winter because the noosa are a bit chilly (ie colder in cold weather - poor toes).

Anyway - long story short, I got less running in during January then ideal given I have a 10mile run coming up mid March... but at least by the end of the month I was running again AND I think I've found a new trainer to go alongside my Noosa's which, after one run, I already love (fingers crossed)..

... Hello pretty 😍

Anyway - the top of the post said stats - so here they are for Jan

Jan stats (thanks Garmin Connect)

SportCountKMHrs: Mins
Swim47.253:17
Bike8149.56:54
Run6293:13

What they were for December
SportCountKMHrs: Mins
Swim22.81:34
Bike120.00:51
Run737.04:13
Strength8-4:07
Yoga7-3:00
Walk1136.847:13

So overall I'm happy (despite the calf), getting back in the pool slightly more consistently is useful (given the time will fly and suddenly it's going to be mid May and I'll be "racing" an olympic distance triathlon

Also lots more biking then December - well that wasn't too difficult given I barely got in the saddle during December! ... ha... still nothing too long, mostly 35-45mins on Zwift, my longest ride was a 50k zwift work out

My longest run was only 7k, but I managed a 9k last weekend so far so good on the calf. Yesterday I did a nice brick session (unplanned, I'm still only roughly structuring any kind of training) - a 45min aerobic ride followed by a 40min easy run with some strides at the end (big strides in new kickers - woo hoo - calf totally fine with that). Still whilst kind of knackering I actually found it pretty fine and enjoyable.

I finally feel 5 years after my surgery that I can string things together - and pretty much pain free. Given how sore my stomach was for over 2 years I'm sure there was some nerve damage but the last 6months or so I've barely had any of the pain I was beseeched with ... thank god!

Well before my run today I definitely need to hydrate some more (dry January went well by the way, but yesterday we went to a local vineyard (Twyford of all places), we sampled quite a lot ... ahum... anyway.... hydration and yoga are required before I go for any easy jog. Timing will be everything given the weather forecast.

Plan for the rest of Feb is to keep up the swim, bike, run. So far so good. Next weekend is off as I'm taking my Mum on a long weekend break with my oldest friend and her Mum (who happens to be one of my Mum's oldest friends!)

Now I look at the stats for Jan - I have to say I reckon back in the day, those stats would have a single week ha ha ha... 🙃
